What is sustainable employability?

What is sustainable employability? Sustainable employability means keeping employees healthy, engaged, motivated, and productive so they can continue to work fit and healthy up to an older age. That is what sustainable employability is all about at its core. Want to improve sustainable employability within your organization? Then choose an sustainable employability training from MEPD! Together with employees, we work on their employability and raise awareness.

Sustainable employability starts on the very first workday of a new employee

More and more companies and organizations are focusing on what sustainable employability is and the topics that surround it. They are investing in the health, engagement, and development of their employees, often reaping immediate benefits. It leads to more job satisfaction, less absenteeism, and higher labor productivity.

Sustainable employability is about creating a policy that takes into account the specific circumstances and wishes of employees in different stages of their life and career as much as possible. This benefits not only the employees but also the organization itself.

Sustainable employability targets both young and old. It results in a workforce that is fit and motivated, optimally contributing to a productive and flexible organization. Sustainable employability starts on the very first day of a new employee. Always look ahead because preventing problems is always better than intervening when things go wrong. The sooner your company starts working on sustainable employability, the more benefits you will gain.

Why sustainable employability?

What is the benefit of sustainable employability for a company? The average age of the population in the Netherlands is rising. People are living longer and fewer children are being born. This has consequences for the labor market. In the coming decades, the outflow of older employees will increase and the inflow of young people will lag behind; this is known as ageing and dejuvenation.

Due to dejuvenation, it is becoming harder to fill vacancies with young people. As older employees leave, a lot of knowledge and expertise disappears from the organization. It is therefore essential to retain as many good employees as possible within the organization. This is where sustainable employability comes into play.

The government is already taking many measures to keep as many employees as possible available for the labor market. Examples include the introduction of the WIA Act and measures around early retirement and pre-pension plans. Employees must be retained for the organization and the labor market for longer. Working until the age of 65th should become the norm. To achieve this, you can apply sustainable employability within your company. It keeps employees productive, healthy, motivated, and engaged for longer! Additionally, it is also part of good employer practices to take good care of your staff.
