What is outplacement?

Outplacement is a structured program that helps employees find new employment after a layoff, dismissal, or reorganization. The goal is to support a smooth and thoughtful transition to a suitable position outside the current organization.

At MEPD, the individual is at the center of the process. We combine personal guidance with in-depth knowledge of the labor market in manufacturing and technology. The program includes support in processing the situation, exploring new career options, and actively finding new employment. Want to learn more about outplacement first? When is outplacement appropriate?

Outplacement is often used during reorganizations, redundancies, or the termination of employment. During a reorganization in particular, it is important to provide clarity quickly and help employees take active steps toward new employment.

In some cases, outplacement support is included in a social plan or termination agreement. Read more about when you may be entitled to outplacement and what obligations are involved.

Are you supporting a single employee? Then individual outplacement is often the best fit. For larger reorganizations, we also offer collective outplacement for organizations in the manufacturing and technology sectors.

Outplacement process: our approach

Throughout the entire outplacement process, the employee works with one dedicated career counselor. This creates continuity, clarity, and trust. The program can take place at a location close to the employee’s home or workplace.

Our approach consists of three phases.

1. Tailored intake

We start with a personal conversation to understand the situation, needs, and opportunities. What has happened? What does the employee need in order to move forward? Together, we determine the direction and focus of the program.

2. Working toward new employment

In this phase, we actively support the employee in finding a new role. This may include:

  • Interview training and workshops
  • Tests and assessments
  • Support with resumes and motivation letter
  • Networking strategies and a targeted job market approach
  • Support with UWV-related matters when needed

The goal is not simply to find a new job as quickly as possible. We focus on finding a role that offers a sustainable, long-term fit.

3. Completion and follow-up support

Even after placement, we stay involved. We support contract discussions and evaluate the transition. If a new position unexpectedly ends, we revisit the process together.

Outplacement during a reorganization in the technology sector

In manufacturing and technology, reorganizations can have an immediate impact on production, planning, and teams. Roles may change or disappear as a result of automation, restructuring, or changing business needs.

A well-structured outplacement program during a reorganization:

  • gives employees clarity and direction
  • supports them in exploring new career options
  • helps reduce uncertainty within the organization
  • supports a careful and professional transition

It is also important to consider the employees who remain with the organization. Clear communication, a sense of direction, and opportunities for development can help maintain engagement and continuity within the team.

A thoughtful outplacement approach therefore supports not only departing employees, but the organization as a whole.

Outplacement due to illness or second track reintegration

Sometimes, the need for career support arises after long-term illness. If returning to the employee’s original position is no longer possible, it may be necessary to explore employment outside the organization. It is important to distinguish between voluntary outplacement and a second-track reintegration program under the Dutch Gatekeeper Improvement Act, or Wet verbetering poortwachter.

Secondment

Ending the employment relationship immediately is not always the best solution. In some situations, secondment can offer a valuable alternative.

With secondment, the employee is employed by MEPD and temporarily works for another company in the manufacturing or technology sector. Secondment can be used alongside or instead of an outplacement program. It allows the employee to remain active in the workforce, maintain professional skills, and gain new experience.

For the employer, it creates time and flexibility to work toward a sustainable solution without having to make an immediate final break.

As part of a mobility program, we help determine which route is most suitable: outplacement, secondment, or a combination of both. The approach is always tailored to the needs of both the organization and the employee.

What does an outplacement process cost?

The cost of an outplacement program depends on the employee’s situation, the level of support required, and the intensity of the program. In most cases, the employer pays for the program and the arrangements are included in an agreement.

Frequently asked questions

An outplacement program is used during reorganizations, redundancies, or when employment is terminated. Guidance is often outlined in a social plan or termination agreement. Also read about when you are entitled to outplacement.

A well-structured process shortens the transition period to new work, limits unrest within teams, and contributes to responsible employer practices. In addition, it strengthens both the internal and external image of the organization.

  • Outplacement → Focused on finding a new job outside the current organization.
  • Career guidance → Focused on personal development and career direction, either within or outside the current employer.

Outplacement is a guidance program used when an employee parts ways with an employer, often due to reorganization, job redundancy, or a labor conflict. The goal is to help the employee find a new job, usually outside the current organization. The emphasis is on application support, orientation to the labor market, and finding suitable work.

Career guidance, on the other hand, does not necessarily mean leaving your current job. It is broader and is used to help you steer your career, discover your talents, and make use of development opportunities. Career guidance can also take place while you are still employed, for example, to grow into a different role or to experience more job satisfaction.

With outplacement, the employment contract ends and we guide the employee towards a new employer. In secondment, the employee remains employed but works temporarily elsewhere. Depending on the situation, secondment can be a suitable alternative within a mobility program.

  • Outplacement → Voluntary or agreed-upon guidance in finding new work, often after dismissal or reorganization.
  • Second track → Mandatory reintegration into suitable work with another employer, when a return to the previous position is not possible.

Outplacement is used when employment ends. Second track is a statutory reintegration obligation in the case of long-term illness, when returning to the original position is not possible. In this article, you can read more about the difference between outplacement and reintegration.
