A colleague recently asked: ‘What really gets you fired up?’ I had to think about it for a moment. And even now I still wonder if this sums it up completely: ‘Inspiring, helping, and motivating people in creative ways.’ How about you? Do you need to dig a little deeper too? Or do you know exactly what excites you and what makes you come alive?
And do you perhaps also know what topics get your colleagues/employees excited? You’ll often be surprised at how much knowledge they’ve acquired over the years. And how they have developed, both in their expertise and personally. It’s a phenomenon we often encounter with our clients: Untapped potential. A missed opportunity!
Untapped potential in the workplace
You have employees in your organization who have been around for years. You appreciate them, but do you really see them? They do their job, and they do it well. You don’t have to chase after them; they are reliable (and often loyal) employees. It’s taken for granted… But do you actually know what’s on their minds? What their wishes are? Are they still happy with what they’re doing? If you skip having meaningful conversations with them, you simply don’t know what’s going on. They may have more to offer and might be ready for a next step. That’s precisely why those conversations matter so much. Furthermore, together you can see how to retain your loyal employees.
Go exploring in your own organization
Especially now, when it’s so important to keep your back door closed and new talent is harder to find, these loyal staff are a huge asset. This presents opportunities. Go exploring in your own organization:
- What are your employees passionate about?
- What can they talk endlessly about?
- What truly sparks their fire?
By adopting a curious and investigative attitude, you might discover leadership qualities or spot talents that could shine (even more) in another department. You might gain insights and find solutions you had never considered before.
See the potential you already have in-house
This hidden potential has so much to offer, but it simply hasn’t come into view yet. Discover and make use of it, because it really pays off. By also communicating clearly and regularly about how, where, and when your employees can work on their development, this subject keeps climbing the priority list. Is lack of time an issue? My colleagues (career advisors) thrive on this kind of assignment; that’s exactly what excites them. Invite them into your organization sometime.
This is what excites our career advisors
They start the conversation with your employee (and, if necessary, with you) to discover together which talents, qualities and drivers they’ve hidden away. Or didn’t even realize they had such great talent. And believe me, our career advisors are very good! Professional, personal, involved and driven. They use certified tests and questionnaires, so you’ll have a solid development plan in hand with the report. And that’s motivating. Also, you (as employer) can make better decisions for your company’s future.
