Sustainable employability is more than just an HR trend; it is a necessity for organizations that want to keep their employees healthy, motivated, and productive. But how do you ensure that vitality and job satisfaction become an integral part of your work culture?

In this Q&A session, Jan Rozema, career advisor, shares not only strategic insights but also concrete steps for successfully implementing sustainable employability. These practical and personal answers have been collected in a clear whitepaper.

How do we ensure that sustainable employability becomes an integral part of our HR strategy?

Do not see sustainable employability (SE) as a temporary project, but as a strategic program that structurally contributes to the organization’s success. By linking SE to organizational goals and embedding it in HR policy, it becomes a natural part of the work culture.

  • Create support: Involve the management team and works council so that SE is broadly supported and not seen as a loose HR measure.
  • Demonstrate relevance: Show how SE directly contributes to job satisfaction, productivity, and cost efficiency. Think of themes such as workload, motivation, vitality, and professional competence.
  • Alignment with HR processes: Make sure SE is consistent with existing HR topics such as talent development, strategic workforce planning, and absence management.
  • Ensure continuity: Repeat the conversation about employability on a structural basis and give managers the task of actively putting the topic on the agenda.
  • Encourage employees to take responsibility themselves, for example by asking: “What do you need to stay vital and competent?”

By structurally embedding sustainable employability, it becomes a natural part of the organizational culture and a shared responsibility.

What role does vitality play in increasing productivity and retaining employees in the long term?

Vitality is about energy, balance, and resilience: Essential factors for sustainable performance and job satisfaction.

  • More energy, less stress: Vital employees feel physically and mentally stronger, allowing them to better handle work pressure and change.
  • Higher productivity: An energetic employee works more efficiently, is more creative, and has a higher level of engagement.
  • Stronger connection with the organization: When employees feel good, they experience more enjoyment at work and are less inclined to change jobs.

Vitality is not a luxury, but a necessity for a future-proof organization with motivated and productive employees.

How do we make sustainable employability and vitality relevant for all generations in our organization?

Sustainable employability is not just a topic for senior employees; it is relevant for all generations.

  • Create awareness: Make employees aware that employability and vitality are not guaranteed, and that investing in yourself is essential regardless of age.
  • Provide life-phase-oriented customization: What a starter needs is different from what a senior professional is looking for. Think of flexibility for young parents, learning paths for mid-career staff, and health programs for all ages.
  • Make tools visible: Show employees what support and tools are available to keep them vital and employable throughout their careers.

By approaching sustainable employability as generation-neutral, you ensure an inclusive and future-oriented approach.

How can we link sustainable employability to the organizational culture and leadership style?

Leadership plays a key role in sustainable employability. A manager who actively listens, inspires, and facilitates makes the difference.

  • Engaged leadership: Leaders who truly have conversations with employees about their ambitions, needs, and job satisfaction stimulate ownership and motivation.
  • Encourage career growth: Ask employees where their strengths and ambitions lie. Are there tasks or responsibilities that better suit their development?
  • Create space for development: Give employees the opportunity to continue developing themselves so they can grow along with changes in the organization and the labor market.

Sustainable employability only becomes truly powerful when leadership focuses on inspiring and facilitating employees in their growth and wellbeing.

How do we measure the success of our initiatives in sustainable employability and vitality?

No progress without insight. Measuring sustainable employability can be done in different ways:
Employee satisfaction & engagement: Use periodic surveys to gauge how employees experience their employability and vitality.

  • Absence and turnover rates: A drop in absence and turnover can indicate that employees are healthier and more satisfied.
  • Monitor personal actions: Ask employees what steps they have taken in the past year regarding vitality, career development, and job satisfaction.
  • Exit interviews: Analyze the reasons why employees leave, and whether employability plays a role in their decision.

Through targeted measurements and analyses, the organization gains insight into what works and where adjustments are needed.
By strategically investing in sustainable employability, we build together a resilient and future-proof organization, in which employees remain healthy, motivated, and productive.
