In the metalworking and electronics industry, we are used to working with precision, high standards, and tight deadlines. Machines are not allowed to stop. But what about the people who keep everything running? Their mental fitness is just as crucial as the maintenance of a production line—maybe even more important.

The blind spot on the work floor

Many organizations pay close attention to physical safety: PPE, health and safety rules, and safety instructions are all meticulously arranged. But mental health is often still a blind spot. And this is where the risks are actually high.

An operator under pressure for weeks, a team leader constantly putting out fires, or an engineer working structural overtime: all examples of situations where the pressure keeps piling up. Until it’s too late.

From reactive to preventive HR

What I often hear in conversations with HR managers in the sector: “We take action when someone is already absent.” But that’s like servicing the machine only after it’s already broken down.

The real gain is in prevention. Not waiting until employees drop out, but creating a culture where:

  • work pressure can be discussed,
  • supervisors learn to recognize signals,
  • and employees receive tools to remain resilient.

Culture change starts small

Mental health is not just about programs and training, but above all about culture. A few small steps can already make a difference:

  • Regular check-ins: not just asking “how is your work going?” but also “how are you doing?”
  • Training supervisors: so they see the signs and have the courage to start the conversation.
  • Safe conversation space: employees need to know they can share what’s on their mind without judgment.

Mentally Fit as a structural approach

At MEPD, we see HR departments struggling to turn good intentions into concrete action. That’s why we’ve developed the Mentally Fit program: practical, accessible, and tailored to the real world on the work floor.

With a mix of check-ins, coaching, workshops, and structural integration into HR policy we help organizations not only manage incidents but also build lasting resilience.

In conclusion

Mental health is not a luxury—it’s a prerequisite for continuity and productivity. By investing preventively, you prevent absenteeism and build a culture where employees stay sharp, fresh, and motivated.
