What is good employment practice?
Good employment practice or attractive employment practice is something every company should strive for. When you are a good employer, your staff will be satisfied and willing to go the extra mile. In addition, employee turnover will also decrease, which means you are less likely to have staff shortages and you will have more control over absenteeism. This allows your company to keep building. So, investing in good employment practice has positive effects on your business! But what is good employment practice? MEPD is happy to help you with this! Since the term “good employment practice” isn’t very concrete, we attempt to make the concept more tangible. We describe good employment practice as 6 core principles. These 6 principles are explained and outlined below.
The 6 principles of good employment practice
For a good employer, it’s important to check the principles below and verify if they apply within your business. Good or attractive employment practice creates engagement and offers many advantages for you as an employer.
1. Be careful: As an employer, act carefully towards your employees. Think of: the duty to investigate and listen, and proportionality. With every decision, also involve employees in that decision. In short, start the dialogue with your employees!
2. No abuse of position: As an employer, you must not abuse your position. Employees should not feel they are at the mercy of their employer.
3. Justify major decisions: If a decision is made that affects the work atmosphere, the work itself, or has another tangible impact, be sure to thoroughly explain this decision to your employees as an employer.
4. Fulfill expectations: Every employee has expectations of their employer; know what they are and live up to them. With empty promises, you will quickly lose their trust.
5. Every employee is equal: As an employer, you may not make distinctions among your staff without a solid reason. Treat everyone equally. There should, for example, be no difference between male and female employees.
6. Offer good insurance: In addition to the points above, providing good accident insurance is also a principle of good employment practice. This relates to insurance for accident damage in connection with work, business travel, or staff activities.
Additional aspects of attractive employment practice
In addition to the 6 principles of good or attractive employment, good employment practice is also explained more broadly. This means that as an employer, you should take good care of your employees. Think, for example, of promoting sustainable employability among staff, paying an appropriate salary on time, supporting and safeguarding work-life balance, and fostering a safe working environment.
Additionally, the training obligation is also seen as an extra aspect. The Work and Security Act contains a training requirement. This obligation ensures that employers provide opportunities for their employees to further their education through courses, training sessions, or workshops. This is also beneficial for the employer, as it enables staff to keep up to date or to specialize.
