Outplacement only truly works when the process is right from start to finish. A carefully designed outplacement program offers structure, direction, and confidence in a period full of uncertainty.

At MEPD, we guide people step by step towards new employment, paying attention to both the practical aspects and the emotional impact. Nelis guides you through: what components are important, how long a program usually takes, and what it delivers for both employee and organization.

What makes an effective outplacement program and what elements should not be missing?

A successful outplacement program at MEPD is built up in various phases, guiding employees step by step towards a new, suitable position. The core components of the program are:

  • Tailored interview: A personal conversation in which we discuss the situation, expectations, and the emotional process.
  • Self-insight and self-analysis: Through conversations, tests, and assessments, we discover talents, motivators, and development opportunities.
  • Building confidence and resilience: We support employees in coping with dismissal and help them to look forward with renewed self-confidence.
  • Preparation for the job market: We help prepare a strong CV and cover letter, develop a personal pitch, and analyze vacancies and organizations.
  • Working together on employment: Active support in finding a new job, including coaching, access to an online job portal, targeted job searching, and assistance with UWV applications.
  • Completion and aftercare: Guidance during the initial period in a new position, with a return guarantee if the new employment unexpectedly ends.

In addition to these core components, MEPD offers extra support, such as financial advice, secondment, help with unemployment benefit applications, training opportunities, and pension insight courses.

How long does an average program last and what are the success factors?

An outplacement program is tailored and usually varies between three and twelve months, depending on the situation and the participant’s commitment. Success factors include:

  • Active involvement: The more proactive the employee, the greater the chance of a successful placement.
  • Quality of guidance: Skilled, personal coaching makes the difference.
  • Network and opportunities: Access to a wide network and job portals speeds up the search process.
  • Emotional support: Self-confidence and motivation are crucial in finding a new job.

An outplacement program is more than just guidance towards employment; it helps employees to confidently give a new direction to their careers.

What are the costs of outplacement and what is the return?

The costs of outplacement vary and depend on program duration (3-6 months) and the scale of the reorganization (from 2 participants to more than 100 employees). On average, the costs are around €3500 per employee for a six-month program. The return on outplacement is also difficult to determine, and is person-dependent. However, it is visible in maintaining a positive employer brand and improved morale among remaining employees. Companies that invest in outplacement often experience a smoother transition and fewer legal disputes.

How do we measure the success of an outplacement program?

The success of an outplacement program is examined from multiple perspectives: the employee, the employer, and the process itself. That’s why we measure at different moments and from different angles.

  • Time to placement: How long it takes an employee to find a new position. A shorter time to placement often means that the program matches the participant’s needs and efforts well.
  • Participant satisfaction: Through interim evaluations and a final evaluation, we ask employees how they have experienced the guidance. Think of: personal attention, the tailored approach, the steps in the program, and the support from the career coach.
  • Interim and final evaluations with companies: We also consult with employers. During an interim evaluation, we discuss progress, expectations, and any adjustments needed. In a final evaluation, we look back on the program: what went well, which results were achieved, and how did they experience the process? This provides valuable insights for future programs and collaboration.

In short

A strong and effective outplacement program provides people with security, insight, and confidence to choose a new direction. Through personal guidance, a clear step-by-step plan, and a strong network, we increase the chances of a quick and sustainable placement. In this way, outplacement helps not only the employee move forward, but also the organization to part ways carefully and with a future-oriented approach.
