Improved self-awareness through assessment
with clear development points
Theo was interested in another position within the organization he worked for. He expressed his interest, and the employer suggested an assessment. MEPD was called in for this purpose and a comprehensive assessment followed. An assessment is nerve-wracking—you really want things to go well. But when we asked Theo what he got out of it, he laughed and replied: A new job!
Healthy tension
‘The main focus wasn’t really: am I suitable for the position, but what are my strengths and development points,’ Theo explains. ‘To keep in mind and to coach further in the future. On the day of the assessment, I felt a healthy tension. You want things to go well and for the outcome to be the right fit for the job. The assessment consisted of three components: arithmetic skills, IQ, and critical thinking. Afterwards, I received an initial feedback. Later, there was an in-depth feedback session and explanation of the report. That’s where the real difference was for me: The coach Dennis explained the otherwise meaningless diagrams and graphs so clearly, specifically, and recognizably.
That report, that’s me
What stuck with me the most is that I make a lot of assumptions. I wasn’t aware of that. I get asked many questions every day and filter them by making assumptions. Now that I know this about myself, I deal with it differently; I check more often, I’ve become more critical. And more businesslike—which was necessary for building a good customer relationship. Furthermore, the report mainly reflected the person I am: a loyal and stable man/colleague. I had no issue with the report being presented to my employer. I have nothing to hide. In a third meeting, the report was discussed with HR and a supervisor in my presence. That felt a bit strange: The report lying on the table being discussed—that’s me.
The new position suits me very well
I started the new position on April 1st and I’m really enjoying it. Besides giving me a new job and the fact that I’m able to do my work better, the assessment has especially given me improved self-awareness with clear development points. I hope to build on this further. Preferably at MEPD. Because the coach really made all the difference for me,’ says Theo.
