What do I actually want to become?
Last year, Marcel started an outplacement program. In his work as a software architect at Thales, he often ran into a particular issue: as an atypical techie, he certainly had the skills to do his job, but he lacked leadership. He was seen as gentle. During conversations with Daniëlle, his advisor, he discovered that this was actually his strength. He is truly a people person. He hopes to be able to fully use this in his new role as an applied sciences instructor.
I was a bit shaken up
“I was really a bit shaken up when we concluded that I was no longer in the right place at Thales,” Marcel says. “There was still some thought given to my situation, and in fact, my work suited the research department in Delft better. But that wasn’t an option for me because of caring for my daughter. A path towards pure software development didn’t suit me either. I had an immediate good feeling with Daniëlle. I needed a personal approach. Someone who would help me think about new options, and especially about the question: ‘What do I actually want to become?’ Together we explored the struggles I have always had as a techie. I make choices based on intuition, I’m creative, energetic, and prefer to be supportive. I very clearly recognized these important (core) values. But my thoughts kept going in circles, I couldn’t get out of that. Until Daniëlle suggested teaching. That was the key!
The pieces of the puzzle came together
In my work, I was already guiding students. I gave trainings. I’m not afraid of presenting. In fact, I really enjoy conveying and explaining things. It energizes me. The pieces of the puzzle came together quickly. I applied for a job as an IT instructor at Saxion — and got the job! There are so many aspects of the job that I was already doing as a software architect. Only now, I am stepping away from a more technical and commercial world into an environment where I believe I will thrive better. I already know that I love to guide and support students. And that satisfaction — that’s why I do it!
Helped to choose a new direction
Looking back on the process, it especially helped me to make the decision to choose a different direction. Based on my values and qualities. That was confirmed again when I had multiple offers from technical companies as well as Saxion. I very consciously chose to become a teacher. That is what suits me best at this stage in my life,” says Marcel.
