Sooner or later you’ll run into questions about your work. Does what you do still suit you? Do you want to grow, or do something different? And how do you make a choice that not only feels logical, but is also feasible?
A career counselor or career coach helps you get an overview and determine direction. However, these roles are often confused. They overlap, but differ in their approach and focus.
This article explains what a career counselor and career coach do, how they differ from each other, what you can expect from a program, and how MEPD supports career development and coaching.
When should you choose career counseling?
A career counselor mainly helps you explore and structure career questions. The guidance is practical and advisory, with attention to concrete choices and next steps.
A career counselor can support you with things like:
- Identifying your strengths, interests, and motivations.
- Making choices about career advancement, retraining, or a different direction.
- Exploring training opportunities.
- Finding direction after a career break or during reintegration.
Career counseling often focuses on what suits you and what options there are. It helps you move from doubt to clarity and get a grip on your next step. You can read more about this on the career development page.
What is the role of a career coach?
A career coach works more from a perspective of reflection and personal development. Where a career counselor offers direction, a career coach primarily helps you gain insight into yourself.
A career coach can help you with, among other things:
- Discovering your talents and motivations
- Formulating personal and professional goals
- Strengthening self-confidence and motivation
- Increasing job satisfaction and mental resilience
The guidance often consists of conversations, exercises, and sometimes tests. The goal is not just to know what you want to do, but also to understand why and what you need to sustain it. In that sense, career coaching also touches on topics such as personal coaching and staying mentally fit.
What can you expect from a program with a career coach?
A career coaching program is personal and tailored to your situation. Still, there are a number of steps that often recur.
You usually start by exploring your current situation: what is going well, what are you running into, and what do you want to change. After that, you work towards clear goals, both short- and long-term.
From there, you translate insights into action. That means:
- Determining which steps are needed.
- Exploring what is feasible.
- Reflecting on what works and what might need adjusting.
By regularly reflecting on your progress, you not only develop direction, but also the confidence to make choices and follow through.
What is the difference and the overlap between a counselor and a coach?
The difference is mainly in the approach:
- A career counselor is often practical and advisory.
- A career coach works in a coaching and in-depth way.
In practice, these roles often overlap. Both help you make conscious choices, better utilize your talents, and remain sustainably employable. Sometimes, a combination is actually the most helpful.
