What is a capacity test?

Employers can determine in various ways whether a candidate is suitable for a particular position. Nowadays, an assessment is almost always a standard part of the application procedure. A capacity test is part of such an assessment. The capacity test is a way to discover how your cognitive ability is structured. Your cognitive ability is your intelligence. Of course, not everyone has the same cognitive skills, which is why results from the capacity test vary. A capacity test provides employers with a clear and comprehensive picture of the candidates’ abilities. Would you like to have a capacity test conducted? Then you’re in the right place with MEPD.

What exactly does a capacity test entail?

An MEPD capacity test measures your abilities and how you perform under time pressure. And especially when it comes to time pressure, many candidates find the capacity test very challenging. It’s useful to know that you can actually prepare very well for a capacity test! In particular, you can prepare for the types of questions and the way answers need to be given. Depending on the position for which you are taking the assessment, the capacity test may consist of different components.

Preparing for a capacity test

The likelihood that you’ll receive a test in an assessment that is exactly like one you have practiced is quite small. So, it really doesn’t make sense to memorize answers. But as mentioned earlier, an intensive preparation—in which you practice the test—will help you improve your approach and problem-solving strategy. Additionally, practicing with a capacity test helps you to develop solutions or strategies to tackle problems or questions you find difficult.

As stated before, many candidates find the time pressure in a capacity test particularly challenging. The time you get to answer the test is limited. That’s why it’s important to stay calm and not panic. Practicing with a capacity test helps you come up with an approach so you can work as efficiently as possible. This can work to your advantage, as assessors sometimes also consider how many questions you answered in total. By practising a capacity test regularly, you know what to expect and build self-confidence. This not only benefits your quality but can also help your quantity. To give you an impression of a capacity test, we’ve listed some examples below.

Number sequences

This section of a capacity test maps out your numerical analytical skills. Usually, this test consists of a sequence of numbers where you have to indicate what the logical next number could be. Most number sequences can be solved using multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction. For example:

Problem:              2, 12, 4, 24, 7, 48, .. ..

Figure sequences

Just like with number sequences, the goal is to discover a logical order. In figure sequences, you see abstract figures. In many cases, you receive a number of figures (3 to 5). These show a logical sequence. Additionally, you are given several answers, one of which is the most logical figure to succeed the previous ones.

Logical reasoning

The purpose of logical reasoning is to measure your ability to draw logical conclusions from the information given. Often, so-called syllogisms are used, which usually contain two statements. Based on these statements, you have to identify the most logical conclusion as the correct answer. You can find an example of this below. Note that you should only draw a conclusion from the information provided, and not be distracted by what you personally find logical. If a problem states that all fire trucks are green, then it is so for that problem.

Syllogism
1. All supermarkets are buildings.
2. Some supermarkets are market stalls.

A. No buildings are market stalls.
B. All buildings are market stalls.
C. Not all buildings are market stalls.
D. No conclusion is possible.

The correct answer is C: not all buildings are market stalls. If all supermarkets are buildings, then at least some buildings are market stalls. This does not mean that all buildings have to be market stalls.
